  2. The Women's Art Expression and Empowerment Group offers women who have experienced domestic violence and abuse an opportunity to make art and express their feelings through the art making process in a safe and supported environment. This is a 10 week program and women are empowered to express their feelings and experiences through a therapeutic creative art process. This group project is open to women of all ages. The goal at the end of the program is to hold a local exhibition of the participant’s artworks. Through the process of exhibiting the artworks the community is engaged, to reflect on and assist in the process of ‘breaking the silence’ around domestic violence and abuse, by validating participant’s experiences which is shared through their artworks and stories of abuse.

The launch of this years Art, Expression and Empowerment Group’s Art Exhibition coincided with the ‘What’s With Domestic Violence Forum’ being sponsored by the Executive of the Inner Sydney Domestic Violence Committee and was held at Redfern Town Hall. We had 12 group participants including women living in the residential treatment program at Phoebe House. The Art Exhibition was opened by Cr. Marcelle Hoff from the City of Sydney Council who spoke passionately about the benefits of this group and she also shared some insights into work she’s done in similar areas with women in the community.

  3. The “ReStart Art Project” project uses Art-making as a medium for empowering Aboriginal youth and also has established a training program for mentoring artists. Through the creative process of recycling used furniture and making functional artworks, the participants are empowered by learning new skills, recycling old furniture and then painting it creatively.

An Exhibition of the art works combined with the stories of the youth talking about their artworks and the meaning for them, engages the broader community in understanding.

This project was developed by artist Angela Yeend to provide an innovative solution and new approach to enhance the social connections and promote the active participation of socio – economically, disadvantaged Aboriginal Youth living in Redfern, Waterloo Darlington and Alexandria who attend the Waratah Links to Learning Centre at the PCYC.

This program is proudly sponsored by the City of Sydney Council.
