Information Stalls at Festivals

During the year we provide at least eight Neighbourhood Centre information stalls at events planned in collaboration with other community service providers in our community. We’d like to highlight these following information stalls and events we attended:-

  1. The Dank St Festival

    - These were the biggest festivals in the Redfern-Waterloo area in 2005 - 2006. These festivals created an opportunity for SSCA-MNC to introduce its services and workers to the community. We consulted the community about their needs and as a result have conducted a needs analysis which can be found in our AGM report.

We provided information bags with the help of volunteers and board members.

These festivals provided us with an opportunity to raise money for the Neighbourhood Centre through a gold coin donation for children’s face painting, raffles of artworks and selling water.

This event is proudly sponsored by the City of Sydney Council.

  2. The Surry Hills Festival

    - At the Surry Hills Festival, SSCA-MNC enjoyed sharing an information stall with the Local Community Services Association to celebrate Neighbourhood Centre Week.

We provided information bags with the help of volunteers and board members.

This festival provides us with an opportunity to give information about our service and groups to people living in Surry Hills, Darlinghurst and  the broader Sydney Metropolitan areas . This includes translated material on upcoming programmes and events.

Proudly sponsored by the Surry Hills Neighbourhood Centre.

  3. Chinese New Year Celebrations

    - We celebrate the Chinese New Near each year with our local Chinese community. We have provided 'Mask making workshops' and enjoy engaging in this auspicious celebration.

The Multicultural Cooking Group including over 20 people, enjoyed the Mask-Making workshop. By celebrating this event with the Chinese Community we are able to find out more about Chinese culture and this provides a valuable insight into cross-cultural needs. We also provide the community with our neighbourhood centre information about upcoming groups and events.

  4. Harmony Day Celebrations

    - We celebrate ‘Harmony Day’ each year in collaboration with other government and non government organisations. In the past we have coordinated the ‘Multicultural Painting Workshops’ that were sponsored by the City of Sydney Council.

Participants of the ‘Links to learning program at the Waratah School’ made aboriginal paintings about living in harmony for our exhibition held at the Redfern Community centre.

The Matavai Art Group provided us with many beautiful paintings and many people made paintings who live on the Waterloo and Redfern Department of Housing estates for the exhibition.

We also facilitated the ‘Let’s make a QueerZine and Mural’, the workshop targeted Queer Multicultural young people, encouraging them to express their feelings about being Multicultural Lesbian or Gay. We also provided information stalls at AMES NSW to hand out information to AMES students and their families and at the City of Sydney Council Town Hall celebrations for Harmony Day.
