Multicultural Bus Trips

Our Multicultural Bus Trips are very popular.  The passengers enjoy going to different places around Sydney. The Bus Trips take them on wonderful journeys to National Parks, Beaches and to Festivals.

Our Bus Trip Co-ordinator, Ilda Migridicyan talking about a recent trip to the Bowral Tulip Festival said, “... It was so beautiful and everybody enjoyed the trip. It was rainy but we were too busy making the BBQ and talking, laughing and the time went so fast and we didn’t even realise that we had come home. It didn’t matter if it was raining as we love the trips.”

“... The Bus Trip to the Tulip Festival was one of those trips that most people would remember. The flowers were stunning, there were huge tulip gardens, tulips in every colour and the small gardens were built in different shapes between small lakes and grassy areas. The passengers had a great time as they could participate in multicultural activities. They joined with Greek Dancing, watched a Russian and German Dancing Group and listened to Brazilian music.”

These trips are run in collaboration with South Sydney Community Transport, if you need to book or require more information please contact Kati.

Russian Community Support Group

The Russian Community Support Group has been running since January 2005. Many Russian speaking people come to socialise and also to learn the English language. The group members say that they are getting older but it doesn’t mean that they don’t want to learn new skills, or refresh their English vocabulary. We have interesting conversations about stories in the newspapers and about history. The members of the group hold presentations on nutrition, recipes and how to balance good Russian food with healthy eating.

The Russian Community Support Group also visits local events and festivals and joins in with celebrations, i.e. “Harmony Day”, “Russian Events” and “Chinese Festivals”. We recently went to celebrate with the local Multicultural Cooking Group where we learnt about culturally diverse histories, traditions, multiculturalism and cooking. We are hoping to join them again for other events and to practise our English language skills.

We are making plans together for next year to make connections with different community groups and organise outings to exhibitions, parks and to theatres.

Katalin Koudrin facilitates this group and is happy to work within the community on Russian project development with other organisations.

The Chinese Evergreen Group

The South Sydney Chinese Evergreen Group was established in April 2002, and to date, the group consists of 35 members. It is an initiative of the Chinese ballroom dancing group to promote cross-cultural interaction within other communities to enhance cross-cultural understanding.

The Chinese speaking community is a homogenous community. It comprises people from many parts of the worlds such as mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Cambodia etc, some of whom came to Australia as refugees. In the past few years there has been an increase in the number of new arrivals from the Peoples Republic of China. The group was established to reduce social isolation and provide avenues to increase advantages to promote cross-cultural understanding and interactions with other communities.

This group meets every Monday at Redfern Town Hall at 10am. They welcome newcomers to join in and have a dance and meet new people and make friends.
