The Women’s Art Expression and Empowerment Group

The Women's Art, Expression and Empowerment Group offers women who have experienced domestic violence and abuse an opportunity to make art and express their feelings through the art making process in a safe and supported environment. We hold local exhibitions of the participant’s artworks. Through the process of exhibiting the artworks, the community is engaged to reflect on and assist in the process of ‘breaking the silence’ around domestic violence and abuse, and by validating the participant’s experiences which are shared through their artworks and stories of abuse.

The launch of this years Art, Expression and Empowerment Group’s Art Exhibition coincided with the "What’s With Domestic Violence Forum" being sponsored by the Executive of the Inner Sydney Domestic Violence Action Group and was held at Redfern Town Hall. We had 12 group participants including women living in the residential treatment program at Phoebe House. The Art Exhibition was opened by Cr Marcelle Hoff from the City of Sydney Council who spoke passionately about the benefits of this group and she also shared some insights into work she’s done in similar areas with women in the community.

We’d like to thank the City of Sydney Council who funds this project.

Culturally And Linguistically Diverse (CALD)

“The Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) Mothers Art, Health and Wellness Group” assists in identifying some of the parenting and health needs of CALD mothers. Through the art making process this group proposes to encourage self-determination and self-identity by promoting the celebration of the individual multicultural mother’s cultural identity.

The concept was developed around the notion of the hospital health professionals developing outreach work in the community. The cross-collaboration between the Royal Hospital for Women and our Neighbourhood Centre has resulted in our aim to break down social isolation and to look at some of the local health concerns for CALD mothers and educate them about health and wellness issues. We also incorporate risk of harm legislation as it relates to the Children and Young Person’s Care and Protection Act as required by the Department of Community Services.

The use of art as a medium for expression has been used widely in the healing professions. Making art is usually a non-threatening activity that encourages communication and offers other health benefits such as breaking down isolation for individuals, enhancing positive self esteem, sharing of ideas and information and learning new skills.

This art based program was written and facilitated by Jhan Leach Coordinator of SSCA-MNC.

An Exhibition of Artworks celebrating Multicultural Mothers was held on the 29th June - 2nd July. It was held at the Royal Hospital for Women in Randwick and officially opened by Noreen Hay, on Sunday: 1st July. For more information please contact us.

Auspiced by South Sydney Community Aid - Multicultural Neighbourhood Centre.

Proudly sponsored by the Royal Hospital for Women.

Methadone Anonymous Meeting

Methadone Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who are current or past methadone patients and who together have formed a 12 step recovery organisation to help themselves.

Methadone Anonymous chapter meetings are open (unless otherwise designated) to all those who wish to learn how to achieve and maintain sobriety over opiates and other drugs including alcohol.

Have you ever attended a 12 step meeting and were not allowed to “share” because you are a methadone patient? Have you ever gone to one of these meetings and felt like you could not be honest about being a methadone patient because there were things you needed to talk about? If so, Methadone Anonymous may be for you.

We meet every Friday afternoon from 2pm at South Sydney Community Aid- Multicultural Neighbourhood Centre.

Sponsored by A.F.I.R.M (www.afirmfwc.org) Advocates for the Integration of Recovery and Methadone.
